dread extensions – synthetic dreads – fake dreads

iKandi’s been offering dread wigs since we first opened. However lately I am getting more and more orders for them so I figured I should write a little maintenance blog so people understand how to keep their wig looking natural and beautiful!

First I’ll give a breakdown of my wigs for the first time wig wearers.

I always, always, use wigs that come equipped with a skin top part. This means the top of your wig will have a part down the middle, or the side (whichever you prefer), and it makes it look drastically more realistic. Also, there is always an option for bangs or no bangs. I try to give out as many options as possible. The possibilities are endless with wigs, headdresses or hair pieces because they’re easily removed and there’s not things compromising the dreads themselves like your hair being braided around it, such as in wearing extensions. Generally hair pieces and wigs are the easiest to maintain because there’s no real chance of bending or kinks. If you keep them in a plastic bag that has a little bit of air in it you’re golden! Usually when I ship wigs I send them in a large, gallon zip-lock bag and keep a big of the air in it that way it’s no smashed and bent up during the shipping process. I recommend keeping them in the bag provided, it’s just easier. Of course, if you have a doll head that you keep wigs on, this is preferable. But some people have cats that think it’s a toy and some people just plain don’t have a doll head specifically for wigs…so if that’s you, just keep it in the bag and you’ll be fine.

Ok! Now here’s some big “don’ts” about dread wigs. I had a customer recently discover this and I felt bad for not giving a heads up previously. Do not use Velcro to hold your dread wig in place. Velcro is baaad for the dreads! Hahah. Use bobby pins or barrettes instead. Also, never ever straighten the bangs on your wig! Do not use a hair dryer or flat iron to shape them into place. The wigs are made out of Kanekalon, which means they’re synthetic and will melt if put under very high heat. Your best bet is to turn on a kettle for tea, wrap the hair that is your bangs around the brush and hold it over the steam for a very short time. The hair will take the shape of the brush and you can style as usual. Steam is the best thing to use for shaping any synthetic hair. It’s got enough moisture in it to not singe the mod-acrylic fiber your wig is made out of, but it’s a high enough heat to be able to mold the dreads or wig hair into the shape you want.

Well I think that’s all the advice I can give! Dread wigs are very simple and very low maintenance. Drop us a custom order today!:)
