Ikandi Dread Wig Maintenance

Posted by admin on Oct 22, 2009 in All Dread Posts!, Dreads At Work | 7 comments

iKandi’s been offering dread wigs since we first opened. However lately I am getting more and more orders for them so I figured I should write a little maintenance blog so people understand how to keep their wig looking natural and beautiful! First I’ll give a breakdown of my wigs for the first time wig wearers. I always, always, use wigs that come equipped with a skin top part. This means the top of your wig will have a part down the middle, or the side (whichever you prefer), and it makes it look drastically more realistic. Also, there is always an option for bangs or no bangs. I try to give out as many options as possible. The possibilities are endless with wigs,...

Shampooing Your Dreads

Posted by admin on Sep 10, 2009 in All Dread Posts!, Dreads at Play | Comments Off

For natural dreads there are products you can buy that are specially made for shampooing your dreadlocks. Generally these are gentle, no detangling shampoos. Meaning don’t buy anything that has intense moisturizers in them because this will cause your dreads, real or not to unravel. For natural dreadlock maintenance, care and cleaning I recommend Knotty Boy or DreadHead. When washing your natural dreads you would basically repeat the same process as you would wash non-dreaded hair, except no running your fingers through it. J Now, synthetic dreads are a little different. You want to avoid getting your dreads soaked as much as possible, especially if there is soap...

Swimming with Dread Extensions

Posted by admin on Sep 8, 2009 in All Dread Posts!, Dreads at Play | Comments Off

Is it bad for to go into a swimming pool with natural dreadlocks or synthetic dread extensions? There are many misconceptions about dreadlocks in general, such as; dreads are smelly, they make your scalp flaky. Or the most popular, you can’t wash your hair when you have dreads. This is not true, whether you have natural or synthetic dreads, there is no reason you aren’t able to keep healthy clean hair! Also a huge misconception about dread extensions is that you cannot get them wet at all. You want to try and get your fake dreads wet as little as possible. However, it’s understood that people like to swim and everyone enjoys washing their hair, so I make my dreads...

Keeping Cool in the Summertime with Dreads

Posted by admin on Jul 16, 2009 in All Dread Posts! | Comments Off

I notice that my influx of orders greatly decreases in the summertime. =P I can see why! With a full head of dreads it’s just not cute to feel the sweat slipping between your braids. However don’t lose hope fake dread lovers! There are some simple solutions to still looking great in the summer but maintaining your favorite hairstyle. Instead of buying 110 Single Ended Dreads – Try getting some Double Ended Dreads instead. You only need about 45 dreads for double enders and they generally produce more volume so they’re not laying flat on your head. Also keep in mind that it isn’t always necessary to wear ALL 45 dreads, or even all 110 if...

Introducing iKandi into the Salon World!

Posted by admin on Jul 9, 2009 in All Dread Posts! | Comments Off

As mentioned before in my last blog, when visited the Orlando Premier Show I was disappointed to see very little extension booths. Making dreads is a tedious and time consuming process, one that I would love to outsource to people looking for work. Particularly, a salon owner and hair dressers. Dread extensions are something no salons really carry. If I can get back in touch with the salon world enough to the point of establishing a business relationship with some advertising and some networking, I think I could put dread extensions on the map as a salon service as well as a custom online market. Baby steps… First there was trying to get back into the salon...

One Day It’ll Be Me!

Posted by admin on Jun 22, 2009 in All Dread Posts!, Dreads At Work | Comments Off

So June 6th was the start of the Premier Orlando Hair Show! I went for one out of the 2 days I got free tickets to. The free tickets made me kind of glad that they screwed me over last year on an extensions class. Last year I signed up to be certified in So.Cap Fusion Extensions. Originally I was going for the cheaper class =P BUT the day I showed up, they told me they weren’t holding classes that day, even though I had already paid for my class and my ticket said that particular date on it….long story short, I got free tickets for this year’s show instead of a refund…Hey, works for me. I got certified with the company I wanted to in the end anyway.  So.Cap is...

Natural Dreads 101

Posted by admin on May 26, 2009 in All Dread Posts!, Dreads At Work | Comments Off

I want to make it known that I do not work in salon. I have no where to do a natural dread set unless I know you personally and you come to my house. I can give you tips and hints and full instructions on how to form and maintain your dreadlocks, but I cannot do them for anyone. Now that that’s out of the way. Here’s how to form your natural dreadlocks. Take a 1in section of your hair to start with. It doesn’t really matter if you start from the top or bottom but I recommend starting from the bottom at the nape of your neck and pulling down hair from a clip or tie for new rows. Once you have your section take out your backcombing comb and start teasing...

Placenta in your Hair?!

Posted by admin on May 19, 2009 in All Dread Posts!, Dreads At Work | Comments Off

Hey I think it’s time for another general hair care tip post. After wearing your dread extensions you may want to get a trim because the rubber bands or ties tend to break your ends a little bit. Usually you can solve this with a quick trip to the salon for a trim but if you don’t have time for that or are like me and hate going to the salons then this blog is for you! Many people experience dry hair and dry ends after wearing dreads, a simple conditioning treatment can usually solve this problem and here are two products I highly, highly recommend if you find yourself having a breakage problem. Hask Placenta! This amazing and easy quick hair treatment is...
